About Tiles
"Tiles" come in a variety of sizes, colors, and shapes. They are the foundation of most tangle work and available directly from Zentangle or a CZT teacher. I have also seen them at a few art supply stores. Most class projects are done on a "tile". One of the awesome things about taking a class, the teacher will give you the materials needed, and might give you a few extra tiles to work on later!
There sizes: 3.5" squares, 4.5" squares, "Bijous" - 2" squares (that feel like you are tangling on a post-it note), "Opus" 10.5" squares, and "Zendala" which are about 4.5" in diameter, rounds. They are either white/ecru, black, and Renaissance (tan). They are a unique, heavy weight, 100% cotton, acid-free artist paper.
Confession: I have been known to "substitute" watercolor paper and/or heavy cardstock-type papers cut to the same or similar size, especially when "practicing", and when I want a larger piece (5X7 or 8X10), or a different color (such as various tans, grays) for a particular idea or size ...
Below are "tiles" I have completed after a class, when an idea strikes, or as "practice" to try out a pattern or two ...

Then I decided to try the reverse - white on black - and a little larger than a "tile". This reminds me of the negatives you used to get when you developed a roll of film back in the day ... This was the first time I tangles on black - it has a somewhat dramatic look ... I think.
