My New Best Friend ... YouTube

Now that I have time ... I've been exploring the many techniques out there for card and paper crafting. As mentioned in the last post, scrapbook.com has many FREE on-line videos you will have access to once your register (which you will need to do to place any orders anyway.) The site even sets up your personal "classroom" and keeps track of your classes for you! My personal favorites have been anything by Tim Holtz, anything by Stephanie Barnard, (both designers for Sizzix) and anything by Simon Hurley. Simon is a teenager, has his own YouTube channel (Inklipse), and makes everything look super simple!

Set yourself up with a YouTube account so you can "subscribe" to your favorites, and it will be easier to find their latest videos. Some post videos when the mood strikes, some weekly, and others daily. Some will be representing specific companies, others will use a variety of materials and products. (This is when you too will start building your stash!)

Once on YouTube, you can search by technique, or specific designers, or companies.

Some key words for techniques you might want to explore:

Folds

Die Cuts

Stamping

Embellishing

Watercolor

Foiling All of these with Cards or Paper Crafting (ie. Card Folds).

Designers to search for (and the ones I have found many ideas from):

Simon Hurley or Inklipse (mentioned above)

Jennifer McGuire Ink - her videos are very clear and easy to follow - she is a Guru!

Justine Hovey

Mixed Up Craft

Positively Papercraft

Maymay Made It

K Werner Design

France Martin and you will discover many more...

Companies:

Sizzix

Gina K Designs

Thermo Foil or Deco Foil

Stampin' Up

Then there is Pinterest ... search any of the above there too. Or, you can follow any of my boards.

Many of the above also have FaceBook and Instagram pages/groups/feeds. This will get you started and you will discover many more on your own. If you come across a good one, feel free to leave in the comments for others. Happy Searching!

Keeping Busy ...

Many have asked how I like being retired... Retirement is great. I honestly have been keeping so busy, I do not know how I had time to work! There are the daily routines and chores around the house and household projects. But beyond that there is the 'crafting', as well as Silver Sneaker classes (exercise) twice a week - starting this week - monitoring my Fantasy Football team, and reading - FOR PLEASURE.

I'm 'old school' - While I have electronic devices, and read the news on-line, I like holding a book in my hands... So I went to the library, got a new library card, checked out (and finished!) a book, and have several "on hold" which I am picking up three more this week...

Have you read The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah yet? I like Hannah's style of writing and will definitely be checking out (no pun intended) some of her other 22 titles. Click on Book 'Club', or page link above, for review and other books I'm reading ...
MIA ... for over two years!

Life has a way of getting in the way... With my eyesight getting worse due to cataracts (aka 'cadillacs') I had to put Tangling on the back burner. Thankfully, surgery in Jan 2017 and March 2017 gave me renewed vision, however I didn't return to Tangling (still vowing that I will, one day) but instead developed a "passion for paper" and onward to custom card making and all things paper craft related.

It began when I purchased a Cricut Explore Air2 and began making items with paper (and vinyl) for the classroom and school. Of course, I couldn't stop with just one machine, and have now built up an inventory of machines including (but not limited to):
Cricut Air 2
Cuttlebug
Big Shot Plus (12" wide)
Xyron Creative Station (sticker maker, cold laminator, magnet maker)
Envelope Punch Board
Scoring Board
2 paper cutters
Hot Laminator

Then there are the countless smaller, can't live without (well, maybe one can), "tools" such as:
Misti positioner w/ the additional Creative Corners
Stamp Shami
Heat Gun (like a mini hair dryer)
large tweezers
Daubers / Blenders
Teflon Bone Folder
Cutting Mat
many embossing folders (for dry embossing)
many die cuts
many stamps
many ink pads of various types and colors
many embellishments (ribbons, trim, jewels, beads, sequins, glitter-sparkle, shimmer, shine-bling ...)
anti-static powder
embossing powder(s) (for heat embossing)
crystal drops
foils
many adhesives, gules, tapes, dimensionals ...
colored pencils, pens, markers, watercolors ... and
too much paper!

Deciding to retire in June 2018 - I then had the pleasure of organizing it all ... Multiple "bins", drawers, and organizers later and I have a well appointed craft room (and could practically open a store)! My favorite work space is still the kitchen counter, so my every-day usage items are in the dining room (We don't use that room anyway so, why not?) with the rest of the inventory upstairs in what used to be the computer room/office. Now I have time to return to blogging as well.

Many people have seen my recent work and asked, "How did you do that?" Or, "I want to do that!" So ...

Let's Talk Paper

While a yellow legal pad is good for taking notes from the many YouTube videos (a future post) I've watched since June, and sketching out ideas, and making lists of material wish lists; and 20 lb. bond is good for the printer, for "scratch", folding to catch embossing powder and using as a protective pocket to put foil through the laminator in, there are many other "papers" one needs in their stash to satisfy the creative urges ...

Card Stock - comes in various "weights" (and colors, and designs) - at least 65 lb - both 8.5 X 11 and 12 X 12. At the vary least: white, black, and kraft (like brown paper bag color). This is used for card bases, fronts of cards, envelopes, to cut die shapes, to stamp ... (The higher the weight, the heavier the paper. Depends on the project, but 110 lb is probably the heaviest used.)

Designer (or DS) - single sheet or "pads"; 6 X 6 or 12 X 12; HUGE variety of prints and patterns; sometimes bond weight, sometimes card stock weight.

Bristol - smooth finish, 100 lb. This is used for a heavier card base, and can be used for watercoloring on if not using a lot of water.

Watercolor - heavy, slight texture, used for front of card or when a heavy paper is needed. Due to the texture it can be a little more difficult to stamp on.

Vellum - transparent, at least 40 lb. It can be used as an overlay, can be stamped, colored on, embossed on, and foiled. One can also make a transparent envelope for other projects as well.

Acetate - not really a "paper", but can be used with paper as a base, to create a "window" in a card, or even a decorated card front when a transparent look is needed.

Photo - glossy finish - tricky to dry and not smear ink and markers (having a heat gun is a necessity), but has it's purposes as a card front.

Other "Tools"

These are personal preferences. Some make crafting easier, some are not necessary but nice to have, and some you can live without. The various YouTube videos (a future post) make suggestions and demonstrate them in use and the decision is up to the crafter. I would definitely recommend:

a good paper cutter / trimmer

a score board

a Teflon Bone Folder - they really do make nice creases in the paper without 'scaring' it

a Misti (or similar) if you are going to be doing a lot with stamps

And eventually you will probably want a die cut machine.

Suppliers

Again, personal preferences ... There are the local craft stores - Michael's, Joann's, Hobby Lobby, for basics. However, the more I explored, the more variety of materials I discovered out there, I found the local establishments limiting. Enter the on-line sites. Amazon has almost anything (key word, almost) and shipping is fast if you have Prime.

** [Quick side track: Did you know if you go to https://smile.amazon.com/ Amazon will make a donation to a non-profit organization of your choice based on what you spend? No cost to you. It isn't a lot, but every little bit helps. Along the top, black bar there is a Support: spot and a default will be listed, but clicking on the little down arrow allows you to change to your choice - may I suggest Vision of Vets in Prescott Valley, AZ? Yes, I have a personal connection to the project, but no kick back ... just FYI - Your contribution won't show until your order(s) ship, but they do eventually :) ] **

https://www.scrapbook.com/ has a HUGE inventory, a user friendly site, sales all the time, free on-line classes once you register (that I have learned a lot from), and they ship fast. Items arrive well packaged and in great condition. Another plus, they have videos and examples of their items being used on the description pages.

https://www.simonsaysstamp.com/ also has a HUGE inventory and ships quickly.

I have found if you do a Google search for the name of an item you are looking for, you will find it somewhere on-line.

Enough rambling for today - I will return soon with YouTube links where you too can learn the many techniques for crafting and being creative... and pictures of recent projects!
Onward to 2016Well, motivation took over today and the holidays are put away for another year - all the decorations, trimmings, and memories are packed away ... The holiday season is always a fun time with family, making and giving surprises, enjoying the school district's two week winter break ... and it's hard to see it come to a close. One more day off, then it's back to work and all the stresses that come with that! The "New Year" is a good time for reflecting on the past year, the coming year, the "must-do" resolutions (which typically last about 3 weeks), which I'm going to call "goals", and inspirations instead ....

First and foremost, my family members are healthy, I'm healthy - can't wish for more than that! My main resolution(s), stay healthy!!

Now, as for reflections, goals and inspirations .... Joining several "Tangling Type" Facebook Groups last year, and scanning / pinning many Pinterest posts, I found myself frequently on overload with tangles and projects I'd like to do ... so many that I sometimes got bogged down, and then did nothing! This year I'd really like to NOT do that, but instead really bring a few projects to completion ...

During break I managed to clean out and organize the "craft" / "computer" room. There are still a few things to dispose of, but it looks much better! In doing that I realized I have a stash of yarn going to waste! Some yarn was incorporated in abandoned projects, so I took them apart to "re-purpose" the skeins. I found some solid colored, eggshell, bulky yarn, from an afghan I was knitting several years ago as a gift for my departed Father-In-Law. I didn't get it finished before he passed, and didn't want to finish it, so it sat... Five days ago I started a new afghan - crocheted instead, in a "waffle" stitch - with a lake hook. It's about one-fourth complete right now... Once completed I might take on another knit or crochet project to continue using "the stash."

In the mean time, I have returned to my tangling journal that I started in August, but put on the back burner when working on Christmas projects. It is almost complete and I have great ideas for 3-4 more! In fact, I have already cut the paper and brainstormed ideas for a few of them ... they will be WIP at the same time, as they all have a different "theme" and depending on my mood at a given time, I will be able to pull out the corresponding "journal".- My first journal (started in August), that will be finished soon (watch for pics!) is "pure" - white paper, black ink, shading with ink and/or graphite. I added new techniques as I learned them, which I will do with the others as well.
- One of the next ones will be more colorful - some pages with watercolored or bleeded-tissue backgrounds; other pages white with colored pens; others with "colored" in patterns. All techniques I am anxious to explore.
- Another I'm planning, will be "found poetry". I'm debating if I want to mount the "poetry" on white or tan ...
- I've recently found videos of an artist demonstrating Mandalas and I really like her style (Search you tube for Alena Light) - so another journal will be all Mandalas
- I like quotes, and as with my first art journal, find it a great place to feature favorite quotes - the forth journal will probably be another one of quotes I come across over time...

And then there are "Challenges" which are a great way to learn and stretch techniques ... The Challenges I worked on during the summer of 2015 were weekly, and participating in 5-6 at a time - was a bit overwhelming! Consequently, I stopped trying to keep up, although I did learn a lot when I was participating ... Now I have come up with my own "challenge". This one will be a monthly, rather than a weekly challenge and will have a monthly theme. I'm thinking a 6" X 6" "tile (which will actually be heavy paper as true "tiles" don't come in that size. - More to come on that ...

That's it - my resolutions, reflections, inspirations / goals, for 2016! Time will tell if I achieve all of this .....
Tangle On!

First, for parent volunteers - tangled ornaments

The ornaments were frosted glass; with "Identapen" tangles.
The "boxes" were made with cardstock and the 1-2-3 Punch Board
by We R Memory Keepers.

Next, the students made a set of "cards" with matching envelopes for their parents. Each student made four.

The cards were 8 1/2" X 5 1/2" cardstock - folded and corners rounded.
The envelopes were "invitation" size.
The students drew "dangle" tangles, and chose a piece of the design on the card
to put on the matching envelope.
Some students added just a tiny spot of color on their designs.

The set of cards were stacked and tied with a string of raffia.
A simple gift that the parents really enjoyed receiving!

Lastly, I like the set of card stationary and decided to make a set for a friend.

I used the same cardstock and envelopes as above.

First, I colored with watercolor pencils and blended with a tiny bit of water.
Since I was working on cardstock and not watercolor paper,
I did not want the paper too wet!
I used a coordinating colored Micron to tangle a simple design
and colored pencils for shading.

Handmade gifts are always fun to design and create, and surprise people with. I hope as I get more proficient with tangling, I can create other fun gifts for next year!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I started off with basic frosted glass ornaments available at most hobby and craft stores - i chose clear frosted, white, silver, gold, and black (or a very dark gray). A tip I read about (and I regret I can't remember where, but I think it was on tanglepatterns.com) was to wear a white cotton glove on the hand that will be holding the ornament. At first I thought this was odd, but the advice pointed out it would keep the oils in your skin off the ornament and nor mar the frosting (it worked!) ... It also gives you a better grip on the ornament.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">First, remove the little hanger loop and cap, also making it easier to hold. I used Identapens on the lighter colored ornaments and White Gelly Roll on the dark ones. It is a little easier to use patterns / a design that do not need to be exact, but if you want an even design, start with very tiny dots around the top to "divide" the ornament evenly. Monograms also make an attractive ornament, although it can be tricky to center the letter and keep it straight on a curved surface. A monogramed ornament make a special gift for family and friends.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here are a few so far ....
It was good to see there are many resources out there ~ one being Zentangling Classes. Janet did all the work, I just drew larger examples of various patterns in the background. She was able to make several good contacts to grow her business. The interactive demonstration was well received and participants were typically amazed at how easy tangling is ... a few pictures from the day...
With getting the classroom ready; welcoming 33 new fourth graders; all the planning, prep, and assessments; Back To School Night Presentation for parents (with 32 students represented); visitor from Moscow; Grandson's 4th Birthday; and a granddaughter striking out on her own ~ it has been a busy month! I do have a few items to share.

Yes, this is a pole dancer, but done for fitness, not the "traditional" pole dancing you might be thinking of ...

This was created from a photograph of, and for, our friend from Moscow. She is actually a friend of my older son's, but I have adopted her! ... She is in training for a performance with a circus, the equivalent of Cirque du Soleil here in the States. Lana works out on "the pole" almost daily. She has incredible strength and is very flexible ... ah, to be that young again!

This next piece was inspired by Project Semicolon. It is described on the Internet and social media as a "global, faith-based, non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and love to those who are struggling ..." It exists to "encourage, love, and inspire." There is a dedication of this movement to developing a much needed awareness of mental illnesses, so I made it the focus of this tangle.

My oldest Granddaughter is a strong young lady. She is on the thresh-hold of striking out on her own. Making the decision to leave home and family was hard, yet she bravely made that decision and is moving out of state - tomorrow. Since she needed a little encouragement, inspiration, and a lot of love, I gave this piece to her... and said good bye between tears. At least I know I will see her in a few months ~ and it is really no different than her going away to college - which she will start in January.

As planned, I have started teaching my fourth graders tangle patterns - we have covered 16 and they love it! Several request we "tangle" on a daily basis ... this coming week we will be starting a project, that I will share in a future post...

Another on-going WIA is a 16-page journal I'm working on. I signed up for an on-line art journaling workshop with Valerie Sjodin, exactly one week before I reported back to school ... Probably not the brightest thing I have ever done, however I am learning a lot and enjoying working on this project. In another future post I will feature a page or two .... and the semicolon is featured in that project as well.

I am also excited to have been invited by my CZT Teacher, Janet Masey, to help her at an Exhibition Fair demonstrating tangling next weekend ... I will post how it goes - until then, tangle on - I will be!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14735968106977488374noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1087292265827981000.post-78243737584821251452015-08-03T20:36:00.001-07:002015-08-03T20:36:59.150-07:00The Wedding Gift ... and A CardSounds like the title of a movie ...

I took a little hiatus from the challenges to begin a few ZIA projects I needed to finish before the Back-To-School rush ... although I'm already having sleepless nights!

I was excited about this piece, and nervous at the same time! I wanted to give a colleague a special remembrance of her special day - but would she (and her husband) like it???? (And I am still fairly new to tangling!) I started with the wedding "colors" - gray and yellow, and of course white. I chose a dark gray card stock (cut to 8 X 10), white gel pen, and white charcoal pencil (After several "tests" on a scrap piece of the gray paper, none of my yellow pens, markers, pencils, showed up!)

The invitation, and some decorations, had their initials - remembrance #2 - include their initials. #3 - include the date of their wedding ...

Searching through clipart I found (I think) the perfect design - a heart created with intertwining ribbons ...

One of my grade level partners (who had done a ton for me and our classrooms this summer) and her husband have Irish roots, and she requested a Celtic Knot. So, a little research, and I found a wonderful set (21!) of videos on You Tube by David Nicholls that really made it look so easy! (And it really wasn't too hard once you got the hang of his little tricks.)

The patterns I used on this tile tells the story of the weekend! (Which gave me an idea for this school year - students taking one of their writing assignments or part of a novel or poem, and "tell" the story through a tangled piece ... hummm.) The patterns from bottom to top - in the middle is Dust Bunny (because they are always hiding); Drip-Drop - because it was raining - HARD; Eureka by Sandy - it represents the winds that came along with the rain; and at the top DL Sunray - because we were all waiting for the sun to appear. It loos black, but is actually on very dark blue paper (representing the stormy sky). Shading with the white charcoal pencil I think I captured the "fuzz" on the Dust Bunny" and the glow of the sun well. I like the final result ...

I didn't really tangle anything else until April 2015, when I bought a sketchbook and some pens on a whim as I remembered how much I enjoyed completing the pumpkin... After playing, I felt like I was missing something and decided I needed a few formal lessons, searched and found a CZT, and began classes the end of May, and was HOOKED! So I have been tangling consistently about two months...

Reflecting on my learning, I realize I am beginning to develop a "style". For instance, as long as I've been doing any kind of craft/needle work, I've always had a "signature" - my initials with slightly curved lines and overlapping. Then several weeks ago I started signing the date a specific way - like a fraction with the month as the numerator and the year as the denominator. I saw someone else had written the date this way and adopted it. I don't always "sign" in the lower right corner either... Now, it is what I call the outline string - the line that borders the tile. Sometimes I use a line, sometimes not, but lately they have the style of a "scroll" ...

Adding to my "style" are some the various techniques I've recently explored that I'm enjoying incorporating (and hope to perfect as I continue learning).

Shading and Shadowing - there are many ways to add depth and dimension

Repeat Pattern Stacks - Cindy Angiel

I've had several ask, "How do you do that?!" I guess the steps one takes to start, and complete, a tile is part of a "style" as well.

Some start with a "string"

Some start at one spot and work out from there

Some methodically fill in one section, then next to it, etc., some are more scattered in placing the patterns

Some go all the way to the edge, some leave about a 1/4" margin

Some ink the lines of the strings, some don't

I guess I am a little from column A, a little from column B ... it just depends on how I feel at the time - I've used all of the above! There ARE no rules, but I decided to take some photos in stages of a tile to show how one MIGHT progress...

This week we are using Adele's own LG, and Rixty. LG is a heart with auras - I added a spot of color. At first I wasn't thrilled with Rixty, now I love it!! It just seemed to flow once I got started. I tried two new techniques on this tile too. First is "Repeat Pattern Stacks", a technique that was started a few tears ago, and I came across recently while perusing Pinterest. You can read/view more about it at The Rainbow Elephant web site by Cindy Angiel. I actually started the tile with it (lower right corner), and it seemed to go well as a base for Rixty... I also tried "Dew Drops" for the first time, created by Lynn Mead, CZT. She has posted a tutorial on A Tangler's Mind. Dew Drops look like (or at least are supposed to!) 3D drops of water on the tile that are magnifying the part underneath it. I might need to practice those a bit more ... I wanted to leave an open area, but it was just too "white, so I added a few Bubblez ... My interpretation of LG and Rixty ~
I tangled a small organic garden scene in class using Nzeppel, Pondee, Tree-Three (#2 & #3 by Simona Cordara of Kai-Zen Doodles), Flux, Fescue, Zinger, and Mooka.

After the ink dries (about 10 minutes) the next step is to tangle on the tiles. I wanted to make the background part of the design, so I "lived with" the four tiles for a few days and carefully choose how I wanted each to look. I've been working on these over the course of a week...

This first one I put a few dots of ink on the tile and just watched the ink spread out in whatever direction it wanted... To keep a "clean" look, I only used tangles on a few "dots". The patterns are Estrel and Geerandoka (both by Simona Cordara of Kai-Zen Doodles) and Snirkle. I used a black Identapen and white paint pen, which interestingly "picks up" color from the ink it is on.

On the next tile, rather than just letting the ink sit after dripping it on, I controlled it a bit more by dropping few drops on the tile and dabbed over them with a felt applicator. You can see the difference in the background - some colors are blended, some softer and muted. This looked like an underwater scene to me, so I used Finery and Bubblz to stay with that underwater feel ... I used a blue Identapen and white paint pen for a few highlights.

On the green and brown tile, I first dropped a few drops of color; let it dry slightly; gave the tile a quick spritz with clear alcohol creating the white dots; then dripped one drop of green in the center to get that larger blob. When it dried, I thought - turtle! So I did a little searching to see how a shell is sectioned, and every turtle I looked at has patterns that were usually lines ...

The result - I decided to just do the shell in the large area. I drew a light "string" to divide it evenly. I chose Villers for the top, and Hypnotic for the sides. On the front and back, side sections I used Jetties. Around the bottom I drew small rounded squares and then a partial aura on the inside of each, not showing the "bottom" line to try and make the shell look like it is curved down (you wouldn't be able to see the bottom looking down on the shell from the top). I used only a brown Identapen.

For the last tile, magenta and lime, with a touch of yellow, I put drops of ink directly on the felt applicator, then lightly dabbed on the tile. I did about half the tile then reapplied the ink to the pad in the same spots and dabbed the rest of the tile without blending. This produced the small, bright dots. I couldn't decide what pattern to us in a tangle ... my granddaughters said it looks like flowers, and maybe grapes, hanging from an arbor or trellis ... With a black Identapen, I drew Coil up the right side and across the top, a few Pokeleaves at the bottom of the Coil, and Wist (without the aura line) as the vines hanging down.
A manageable size ; two to three tangles max; know when you've done enough; and it's ok to leave white space.

Before starting I also took a peek at Joey's Monotangle Challenge # 6 - F - Florez (not to be confused with Florz)

Now what could be simpler than completing two challenges with one tile??
I chose 3.5 white square and a #2 Micron pen (only one size for this tile); one tangle - Florez - can't get much simpler; and no shading either - know when enough is enough!

It only took a short time to complete (one cup of tea worth), but I forgot about my knee and relaxed .... then it happened - phone rang - PT canceled! Woo Hoo - more time to tangle ...
I hopped over to Suzy Mosh's Weekly Challenges to see what else I should be doing ...

For Tangle Me 3 - Week 4 - the focus is Ixorus. I have really wanted to try the technique of Zentwining by Lynn Mead of a tanglersmind.com.

(I am liking the scroll look for the outside edge string - I was inspired by a similar one on someone's tile posted in a group on FB but can't remember which one to give them credit!) Now I think Zentwining needs a larger space than 3.5" square; and the Ixorus looked a little squished, so I tried again ... this time I used the entire tile surface for the three variations. The pattern at the top two sections is the original pattern; the two on the right, with the Opus-like "arms" are using wider "arms, and a triangle for the beginning shape and auras; and the other variation - on the left - uses a #8 pen to give wider lines, and three open humps for the pattern and auras. A little shading where the auras meet adds depth. I think this one shows the pattern better ...

I will need to try the Zentwining technique on a different project...

That's New To Me is becoming one of my favorite weekly challenges (along with Tangle Me 3). This week the focus is on W, and the Artist Focus - Erin Olson (who has her own challenge - Zendala Dare - I do not participate in these, yet!). Erin has created eight interesting patterns - I chose to use her Phystyl (horizontally across top of tile - embellished a bit with little circles, just because), which reminds me of Pokeleaf (one of my favorites). The W patterns I used are Wub (which gave me the chance to work on shading to create "rounded tubes" as I call them, in the ribbon down the left side); Worts and Wobbles with Wiffles (the bottom ribbon); and Worms (down the right side ribbon). All of these patterns were ... NEW TO ME. The background I am calling Window Panes - but it is really Florz with a touch of color. I also used three different intensities of shading on this piece ... Can you see the difference?

Since it is a vase, and I like the organic garden so much, I decided it needed to be done "in the round". My black Identapen and imagination was put into use and here is the result ~

The first of many challenges this week is Suzy Mosh's New To Me H with the artist focus on Michelle Beauchamp. For H I used one Hurry, a border of Hibred, and two sprigs of Hurray. Michelle has great instructions for how to draw a spiral (something I've been wanting to do) and I decorated the spiral with Blooming Butter and Mak-Rah-Mee. I added a touch of yellow to represent the "Butter". ALL of these patterns, and spiraling technique, are new to me ... I'd like to use all the patterns again, but especially Mak-Rah-Mee as I don't think I did it justice here.
Suzy Mosh also offers the Tangle Me 3, week 3, with the focus on Strircles. The original pattern is black and white in the upper right corner. The two variations: parallel curved lines filled in with Tipple, and ovals with the pattern Curl; and a slightly wavy line and color added. I like this pattern - it can be both bold or soft and is very versatile.

The Diva's Weekly Challenge #225 for July 6, comes to us from a guest blogger and CZT, Jen Crutchfield. She asked for color - 2-3 that we maybe have not thought of using together before. Now it happens that just the day before this challenge, I was playing with Alcohol Inks. Alcohol Inks are vibrant splashes of color that you don't really have full control over what the final outcome will be. There are several ways to apply the color and they are a lot of fun to work with! (But that is another post...) Once dry, you tangle on top, incorporating the color design into the patterns. This tile (4" ceramic) shouted "organic garden" to me... I used 'Nzeppel for the stone wall, Pondee & Tree-Three (by Simona Arian Cordara if Kai-Zen Doodles), Flux, Zinger, Fescue, and Mooka, with a tiny Printemps Bijou. the tangles were done with a black Identapen, yellow Sharpie, and white paint pen.

Joey's Alphabet Monotangle this week is E - Entwine. Boy, this was a challenge! Entwine is considered an advanced pattern - I can tell why! It required a LOT of concentration. When I started out I had no idea where it would go as Entwine is typically used for a border, and looks like it should be one. I didn't just want to "border" the tile ... I also decided I needed "something" in the background to break up the white, but wanted it simple. I've seen this type of background used by others (sadly I can't remember where or I would give credit, and will if I see it again...) While I know there are a few mistakes (I skipped one entire step!), and I'm not totally thrilled with the shading, it doesn't look too bad. This is my first attempt with Entwine, not sure there will be another ...

Not finished yet ... It's A String Thing has reached it's 100th (Zentennial) Challenge!! Time to break out the metallic pens - first time I've used them - and black tiles... I was going for an elegant look! (Although the skipping silver interfered with that!) I wanted to do something that would represent all 100 challenges, and trying to fit 100 "strings" on a 4.5 square wasn't going to work (I would need a 45" square) ... I started with her commemorative "100 string" ~

For this occasion, Adele created a new pattern that looks like the number - 100 - with the idea to fill in the 0s with a small embellishment. I used it at the top (or upper left depending on the angle you are looking at the tile), and to outline the "string itself. The large 0s are filled with Cruffle. I then filled in the large 0 "string with one motif of each of Adele's patterns. They are in order from the butterfly, Ann (that has a touching story behind it - and it is in gold to match the yellow ones talked about - see her blog); on to Cack, Bud, Budlite, Iza, Fancy Nancy, LG, Lanie, Lucky, Pauline's Pigtail (another cute story behind it), Teenos, XAV (out of order to make it fit), and Uncorked. I enjoyed adding all of these to my sketchbook (where I practice patterns) and will use them again! Now, I need to go buy a better metallic silver pen ...
Number 1, was to share your favorite tile - I shared my basic class tiles, which started it all (formally). Boost #2, All About Cadent - on any size white tile, with at least two variants (which I missed until I went back and read again to add here!!) Oh well, I'm blaming it on the pain in my knee this week (that's my story and I'm sticking to it!) No rules, no mistakes, right? Actually there are two - the outer "string" is one large Cadent, and then the "plants", that look a little Dragonaire-ish (my favorite). Someone on FB commented that these have an under water feeling ... I think I agree!
I wasn't sure how this was going to end up - at first it looked like it was going to be a compass rose, but I kept going, blackening sections, adding embellishments, shading, and ended up with this ~ I'm calling it Waiting For Fireworks, since it was completed and being posted the afternoon of July 4th. The patterns are munchkin, with a few Thing In The Middles and some Aahs.
And one thing we like to share with students is our love of "continuous learning" ... even if it is of an artistic nature ~

I'm spending significant time this summer break learning how to tangle ... My intention is to teach some tangling to my 4th graders in the fall to build / increase focus, concentration / increase memory, creativity, confidence, prefect fine motor skills, strengthen eye-hand coordination, how to calm down or relax, and to have fun!

I am going to teach 16 easier patterns, then give them an 8.5" X 5.5" piece of paper (I think kids will need to work a little larger initially); show how to draw a "stacked" string, and have them choose their favorite 11 patterns to complete a piece. this will be something they can work on over time, when they have finished work, and while I am assessing those first few days/weeks.

I like to make a model or finished product to show the class so they get the big picture idea, where we are going and why, with a project - so I created this model. The students will be using Sharpies, so I did too so the representation would be similar (probably not my best work since I wasn't using my good Microns) From top to bottom the patterns are Ash, Printemps, Meer, Wired, Neuron, Flux (with Tipple), Chainlea, Framz, Poke Leaf, Florz, and Sand Swirl. They will also learn Noodlz, Hollibaugh, Golvin, and Poke Root.

I'd love to know your thoughts - Do you think this will work? Do you know of any patterns that are easier that I might use instead of the those listed?

Oh, and part of our weekly ticket drawing will be the opportunity to "win" lunch and tangling with me! I will teach them more complicated patterns and we will work on a more traditional sized tile (probably the Apprentice 4.5" square.)

I'm looking forward to this ~ my own personal challenge!
I just couldn't wrap my head around it - Tipple is typically used as a "filler" around/through/behind other patterns... I've used it around Flux, in between Hollibaugh, down the edges of Meer, even to represent bubbles ... but alone, just little circles ... I thought and thought and visited the challenge page several times looking at about 65 other entries for inspiration ... Then it came to me! I can still use it as a "filler", and they don't have to be the same size, and I can practice my shading to try to create depth ...

I've been using letters lately - on the canvas I did (on the Beyond Tiles and Paper Gallery page), and on a WIP wedding gift ... I also like making "stone walls" in organic garden themed pieces - so put the two together ... I saw on Pinterest, a lower case letter inscribed on top of the same, capital letter and thought it looked cool (although it was "flat" and not a tangled piece).

To begin the week (June 28) we have Tangle Me 3 and That's New To Me from Suzy Mosh.
The Tangle Me 3 focus is the pattern, Axlexa. For some reason I'm thinking "color" this week (Maybe it was finding all those barely used colored pencils last week...) Since I was tangling original Axlexa plus two variations = 3, and given the date (almost) - red, white, and blue seemed to fit. I'm not sure the color provided the shading for what I was trying to achieve, and make the areas appear like they were folded or coming up off the page, but I liked learning the pattern!

For That' New to Me, the focus letter is N. There has been a lot of attention going to Narwal on the blogs and FB groups lately, and I've never tried it, so I decided to. I added Noodlz to the background (at the top), created by this week's author focus, Neil Burley. I thought a third pattern would look good at the bottom, Neuron - this one I've only done one other time, a few weeks ago on one of Joey's challenges, so I tried it again, Narwal I need more practice with; Noodlz was fun, reminds me of "Wired", and I followed the rule for it!

Joey's Alphabet Monotangle this week is Dugwud. The inspiration for Dugwud, is the Dogwood blossom. Growing up on the east coast, Dogwood trees are one of the plants I miss and they are not seen here on the west coast very frequently. I remember Dogwoods being either white or with a blush of pink - thus the colors on this tile. If you are thinking two different pens were used you are correct - the center and outside were both done with black, the middle band I used a brown - both Microns. I like the intensity and shaping of the smaller section of the pattern in the middle.
Looks Like Rain ...... And not just a shower, but a thunderstorm - which is practically unheard of here in So Cal. Lightening is never good when the ground is this dry ... and the humidity right now is about 83% ... So instead of getting ready to go out and run errands, I'm starting my day with a few tangles.

Square One (FB) Focus (6/26-7/2) is Meer - the original is surrounded by a meer "ribbon" (my first attempt at drawing something twisted), and thin, curved meers in the background, Hollibaugh style. It is "pure" using a 3.5" tile; Micron pens 01, 03, and 005; and graphite for shading.
This one, is a Weekly Alphabet Challenge by Diane and Carolien. I think it is great that the challenge authors live on opposite sides of the pond - one in the US and one in Denmark. Thanks ladies, now I have one on Wednesdays - a few more and I'll have one every day of the week!

For this alphabet challenge, three letters are given at a time. Starting this week (week 12) they are on J-W-O, having already gone through the order A-Z once.

I find challenges not only fun, but a great way to build up a resource of patterns. I'm glad I have the time to participate while school is out for the summer... Here is my interpretation using Jessicup, Ojo, Organza (a little like Frillee), and a bit of Web. I also used the most recent string - #162 - however once the patterns were laid down the tile looks a little "left" of the original string ...

I an debating adding a touch of color, since yesterday I dug in to an old trunk and found a set of 50 colored pencils, barely used - woo hoo - along with a set of 36 watercolor pencils, watercolor crayons, 4 sets of markers (but they are broad tip), a set of drawing pencils, 2 metal pencil sharpeners in packages, and ... be still my heart ~ a Stadler Mars 700 - .30 - refillable technical pen ... with a good bottle of ink!!

I know the pen I've had for about 35 years ... I use to draw cross-stitch charts, all by hand, for a designer, in another life. Yes, it was a little clogged - but after a few soakings in warm water and some delicate cleaning I managed to get it to the stage that when I shake it I hear the little "click" so I'm thinking it is good to go. I just need to get up the nerve to fill the cartridge and give it a try ... I digress ~ Happy Friday!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14735968106977488374noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1087292265827981000.post-14340733730779050132015-06-24T19:04:00.002-07:002015-06-24T19:04:33.830-07:002 Challengers - 3 Tiles

My CZT Mentor Was Right ...

Completing these challenges is "stretching" me, and I am learning a lot! In most cases I am trying patterns that I've never used before ~

I picked TWO more challenges this week from Suzy Mosh. Suzy posts her challenges every Sunday. When I came across them this week I wasn't sure I wanted to take on more challenges, but they both stayed on my mind for a few days and I thought I may as well jump in on these too (while I'm on summer break and have time!) In her That's New To Me Challenge, she gives a random letter (this 25th week it's F) and I needed to use at least one new pattern I've never done that started with F - I used four as I'm new to tangling! The patterns I chose: Furr Balls (the name cracked me up and I loved that the designer has four pets and that is how it got its name!); Facets (looks like diamonds); Frillee (which reminds me of eyelet fabric, although there is another pattern by that name); and Framz (because I liked all the embellishments and variations that could be used). I think the four compliment each other nicely, two are straight and two curvy. I also like them on black ~

Suzy also posted a new challenge on Sunday - yes, this is its inaugural week! For this one, Tangle Me 3, she names the focus pattern - this time Cadent. The idea is the participant uses the original pattern plus two variations of it. It affords the opportunity to try out the pattern in more than one way on a single tile - a monotangle - and I think will create a great resource for later projects. Here is my entry ~

Thanks Suzy! I like both of your challenges and hope to continue participating in them.

Today, I completed It's A String Thing #98 and learned Cruffle, Curl, and Mel Mel, and I like them all! Cruffle has the opportunity for many variations (I used two). It can be used to fill in a section, in an organized grid, or as a straight (or curved) line and looks a bit like a bead. Curl is quick, easy, and fills in nicely. Mel Mel is a pattern created by the String Thing Challenger, Adele Bruno CZT. For me, I still need a little practice with this one, but know I will use it again. I found it comfortable to do large, but think it would look equally good smaller. It has a lot of embellishing possibilities, several I incorporated here.

Surprisingly, I also managed to open, find, remove, and destroy three hard drives for old computer equipment today, that we have been needing to recycle! I think ZENtangling is making me more productive ...
